Breaking: Hawaii issues tsunami alert, evacuating up to 100,000 residents and tourists --A seismic sea wave estimated at 3 to 8 feet is heading toward the islands. 27 Feb 2010 Hawaiian authorities were rushing to evacuate up to 100,000 residents and tourists from low-lying coastal areas Saturday morning as an estimated 3-to-8-foot tsunami raced toward the islands at the speed of a jet plane. Radio stations were broadcasting civil defense alerts, and sirens sounded in the early-morning hours, well ahead of the expected arrival of the waves, estimated at about 11 a.m. Hawaii time, triggered by a massive earthquake in Chile.
8.8-magnitude earthquake hits central Chile; tsunami warnings issued for Hawaii, Australia, South America 27 Feb 2010 A massive earthquake rocked Chile before dawn on Saturday, killing at least 147 people and triggering tsunami waves that threatened much of the Pacific region. Emergency warning sirens blared in Hawaii as coastal residents scrambled to prepare. The magnitude-8.8 quake was the worst in Chile in half a century. As the earth heaved, bridges buckled, homes collapsed into piles of bricks and cars flipped over. In Concepcion, a southern city near the epicenter, explosions rocked the main university as vials of laboratory chemicals shattered and ignited a building.
Chile earthquake: tsunami reaches Pacific islands as death toll hits 147 --At least 147 have been killed and nearly a quarter of the globe put on tsunami alert after one of the most powerful earthquakes of modern times hit South America. 27 Feb 2010 A tremor with a magnitude of 8.8 devastated large parts of southern Chile and sent huge waves racing at up to 400 miles an hour across the Pacific. Isolated ocean islands were reported to have suffered severe wave damage, and tsunami warnings were issued across a vast area stretching from Russia and Japan through to the Philippines and New Zealand. In the Chilean capital, Santiago, some five million woke up to "hell" as the earthquake, which struck in the small hours of Saturday morning, collapsed tower blocks and bridges and swallowed cars as it ripped cracks in the roads.
Warship leaves O.C. to avoid tsunami 27 Feb 2010 The guided-missile destroyer USS Dewey is leaving the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station to avoid potential damage from tsunami waves that could roll into Anaheim Bay, says Gregg Smith, a spokesman for the base... Smith said they also want to protect the Dewey’s sonar dome, which is below water, and is the lowest point on the 509-foot vessel. The ship arrived in Seal Beach Friday to take on weapons and prepare for its commissioning in Seal Beach on March 6.
Chile Quake Is One of the Biggest in a Century --Tsunami unleashed by quake is now speeding across the ocean at 550 miles per hour, or the speed of a jet plane 27 Feb 2010 The 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off coastal Chile in the early hours of the morning is one of the biggest temblors anywhere in more than a century. Data from the U.S. Geological Survey suggests that this morning's Chile quake tied in fifth place with an 8.8 quake that hit Ecuador and Bolivia in 1906. Only four quakes have been bigger since 1900. Scores of countries around the Pacific Ocean are bracing for a tsunami unleashed by the latest quake, and which is now speeding across the ocean at 550 miles per hour, or the speed of a jet plane.
High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program 27 Feb 2010 The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is an ionospheric research program jointly funded by the US Air Force, the US Navy, the University of Alaska and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Its purpose is to analyze the ionosphere and investigate the potential for developing ionospheric enhancement technology for radio communications and surveillance purposes (such as missile detection). The HAARP program operates a major Arctic facility, known as the HAARP Research Station, on an Air Force owned site near Gakona, Alaska. The most outstanding instrument at the HAARP Station is the Ionospheric Research Instrument (IRI), a high power transmitter facility operating in the high frequency range. The IRI is used to temporarily excite a limited area of the ionosphere... As of 2008, HAARP had incurred around $250 million in tax-funded construction and operating costs.
