Breaking: 1 dead, 1 wounded in shooting at Long Beach federal building 16 Feb 2012 (CA) Two people were shot, at least one of them fatally, on Thursday afternoon at the Glenn M. Anderson Federal Building in Long Beach, law enforcement authorities said. At least one of the victims was a federal law enforcement officer, but it was not immediately clear from which agency. That person was taken by paramedics to St. Mary's Hospital in Long Beach. The Glenn M. Anderson Federal Building houses customs and immigration agents, among other agencies.
Facebook Disables CLG Editor's Account Name, Claiming It Is 'Illegitimate' --'The name you entered was not approved by our system.' 17 Feb 2012 Facebook has decided that 'Lori Price Legitgov,' the personal Facebook account title of the Editor-in-Chief of Citizens for Legitimate Government, is (suddenly) not 'legitimate' and therefore disabled. Price's Facebook account was established in September 2007 as 'Lori Price Legitgov,' and she never received any notifications or warnings from Facebook regarding the account. The official page for Citizens for Legitimate Government was not affected.
Netanyahu: Iran sanctions not working 16 Feb 2012 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias signed a search and rescue agreement on Thursday. According to the agreement, in the event of a disaster Israeli aircraft will be authorized to enter Cyprus's airspace, and vice versa. While in Nicosia, Netanyahu also addressed the Iranian nuclear threat, saying the sanctions imposed by the international community on the Islamic Republic "are not working." According to Netanyahu, the regime in Tehran violates every resolution and has no respect for international norms. [In psychology, we call that 'projection.']
Heightened Security in U.S. Over 'Iran Threat' 14 Feb 2012 With Iran allegedly striking out at Israeli citizens and Jewish targets around the world, Israeli and American security officials in the U.S. are on high alert. "We expect it and we are ready," one senior Israeli official told ABC News. Israeli officials told ABC News that the level of personal security on high-ranking Embassy officials as well as other, lower profile officials in the U.S. is at its highest in at least five years, a response to what they called "a coordinated series of attacks." When Israeli officials travel to and from events, ABC News has observed a notable increase in the security presence.
Would-be bomber of jetliner gets life sentence 17 Feb 2012 The N*gerian man who tried to detonate explosives hidden in his underwear aboard a Detroit-bound jetliner on Christmas Day 2009 has been sentenced to life in prison. Speaking briefly in U.S. District Court in Detroit on Thursday, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 25, called his sentencing "a day of victory" and said he was "proud to kill in the name of God," according to wire service reports. A criminologist who analyzed the transcripts of the FBI interrogation of Abdulmutallab wrote in a report submitted to the judge that the would-be bomber was unrepentant.
Hacker Suspected in Pentagon, NASA Breaches is Arrested 16 Feb 2012 A 20-year-old hacker who goes by the Internet name TinKode was arrested recently by Romanian police after he bragged about hacking into Pentagon and NASA computer systems. Razvan Manole Cernaianu is accused of revealing security holes and publishing information about SQL injection vulnerabilities in those agencies. The Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism said Cernaianu also offered a computer program on his blog that could be used to hack into websites and published a video showing Internet attacks he had made against the U.S. government. The FBI and NASA assisted in the investigation.
Water, gas continue flowing from Alaska blowout 16 Feb 2012 A blowout at an exploratory well near the coast of the Beaufort Sea underscores the threat to the pristine Arctic Ocean environment if offshore drilling is allowed by the Obama administration, environmental groups said Thursday. No crude oil spilled onto the tundra and no workers were injured in the incident Wednesday, but an estimated 42,000 gallons of drilling mud was spit out of the well owned by Repsol E&P USA Inc. The blowout on the Colville River Delta, 18 miles northeast of the village of Nuiqsut, also expelled natural gas that could have ignited.
In addition to Karl Rove's Romney pac attempting to steal Iowa, Maine caucuses: Romney worked the CPAC straw poll 12 Feb 2012 Mitt Romney's campaign, in need of a boost following a trio of losses last Tuesday, shelved their "no straw polls" policy and worked to win the CPAC vote. A Republican source confirms to me that Romney's camp bought registrations at CPAC to ensure their victory at the straw poll. There was also a more visible presence. Two young men, one who identified himself as a staffer but declined to talk and another who said he was a volunteer, held up Romney signs Saturday morning near the entrance to the ballroom and urged attendees to vote for the former Massachusetts governor.
Passions Flare as House Debates Birth Control Rule --The first of two lineups of witnesses at a House committee hearing on Thursday consisted of five men. 17 Feb 2012 President Obama's compromise plan to require free insurance coverage of contraceptives for women touched off a tumultuous debate on Thursday in which members of Congress mixed political theater with soul-searching over potential threats to religious liberty. Lutheran and Baptist clergymen and an Orthodox rabbi joined a Roman Catholic bishop in telling lawmakers that Mr. Obama's latest policy of shifting the responsibility for paying for the contraceptives from religious institutions to their health insurers was unworkable and did not allay concerns about government entanglement with religion. Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, Democrat of New York, asked: "Where are the women? It's outrageous that the Republicans would not allow a single individual representing the tens of millions of women who want and need insurance coverage for basic preventive health care services, including family planning." [Better yet, *where* is the hearing on the US government allowing waterboarding under Bush and the signing of the NDAA by Obusha allowing detention of US citizens without charge or trial? I'd like to know why we don't get *those* House committee hearings. --LRP]
Before current birth-control fight, Republicans backed mandates 15 Feb 2012 Since President Obama moved to require Catholic hospitals and universities to offer their employees contraceptive health benefits, Republicans have rushed to accuse the administration of an unprecedented attack on religious freedoms. None has been more forceful than former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who accused Obama of "a direct violation of the 1st Amendment." But years before the current partisan firestorm, GOP lawmakers and governors around the country, including Huckabee, backed similar mandates... In six states, including Arkansas, those contraceptive mandates were signed by GOP governors.
