From phillywcw at hotmail.com Mon Feb 15 22:20:09 2010 From: phillywcw at hotmail.com (Philadelphia WorldCantWait) Date: Mon, 15 Feb 2010 22:20:09 -0500 Subject: [World-cant-wait-philly] Anti-War Actions in Philly - John Yoo, Fattah's Office, Chestnut Hill Against the War, ect... Message-ID: Thursday February 18th, 2010 5pm Protest John Yoo ? the lawyer who justified torture under the Bush Regime Water Boarding Demonstration (weather pending) Location: Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP One Logan Square 18th & Cherry Streets 23rd Floor Multipurpose Room John Yoo is touring the country and promoting his new book ?Crisis and Command: Executive Power from Washington to Lincoln.? The Philadelphia Lawyers Chapter is sponsoring the lawyer who legally justified torture under the Bush Administration. John Yoo is the architect of the 2002 torture memos under the Bush regime?s Department of Justice, Office of Legal Council (OLC). A lawyer, Yoo drafted legal memos circumventing the Geneva Convention, international rules for humanity. His most heinous crime is redefining torture. He wrote in the infamous Bybee Memos ? these techniques may amount to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, they do not produce pain or suffering of the necessary intensity to meet the definition of torture. From these decisions, we conclude that there is a wide range of techniques that will not rise to the level of torture.? John Yoo made his career by helping the Bush Administration legally exercise excessive executive power and torture. Since September 11th, 2001, we now know that hundreds of men and boys were captured by military sweeps in the Middle East, held without legal representation, and were tortured (some people have died in the process). Who are the real murders and criminals ? John Yoo and the Bush Administration. Nobody has been held accountable for their war crimes and crimes against humanity. John Yoo was raised in Philadelphia, and is a law professor at UC Berkeley and writes a column FOR THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. Sponsored by world can't wait. email: philly at worldcantwait.org , www.firejohnyoo.org, warcriminalswatch.org ------------------------------------------------------------------ PDA Philly, A lot of members of Congress call themselves progressive. Now is the time where they get to prove it. Philadelphia's own Rep. Chaka Fattah has been an ally of ours on the health care reform front and we are grateful for that. However, he has made clear his support for President Obama's expanded war in Afghanistan. Billions of dollars spent to chase a handful of al-Qaeda members (if any) through Afghanistan when our country is going through a difficult recession is not a progressive cause. Rep. Fattah needs to learn that Philadelphians want our tax dollars to go to social services--health care reform, job creation, repaired infrastructure--not foreign adventures that are just as likely to create more terrorists as they are to defeat them. Join the Philadelphia Chapter of Progressive Democrats of America for a "Brown Bag Vigil" outside Fattah's office. We have an invitation to speak to his staff and we will be rallying outside his office, letting the University City community know about PDA's campaign to end US occupation of Afghanistan and focus on domestic needs. We will ask Fattah to support HR 2404, calling for an exit strategy from Afghanistan, and HR 3699, prohibiting any increase in the number of U.S. Armed Forces in Afghanistan. PDA Brown Bag Vigil Rep. Chaka Fattah's District Office 4104 Walnut Street (University City) Wednesday, February 17th 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM (In addition to your lunch, if you are artistically inclined bring a sign thanking Fattah for his support of universal healthcare and asking him to vote against war funding. Some PDA leaflets will be provided to hand out but feel free to bring your own anti-war material.) Register to attend this event here. RSVP and questions to pdaphilly at gmail.com Brown Bag Vigils will be happening all around the country on February 17th.
